o Network Hardware, Software and Setup Costs: Computers don't just magically network themselves, of course. Setting up a network requires an investment in hardware and software, as well as funds for planning, designing and implementing the network. For a home with a small network of two or three PCs, this is relatively inexpensive, possibly amounting to less than a hundred dollars with today's low prices for network hardware, and operating systems already designed for networks. For a large company, cost can easily run into tens of thousands of dollars—or more.

In the end, as with any other decision, whether to network or not is a matter of weighing the advantages against the disadvantages. Computer networks can be so powerful and useful that it is common for them to be used for more and more purposes. A network might start out as a small convenience, but later may become mission-critical - the computer can no longer do its job without a properly functioning network. If the network was originally only a convenience, there may not be any attention given to what might happen if the network were to fail, even after the network becomes indispensable. All of the computers in an office building might become completely useless if a single network component fails.

5. Rather than having to make a cold call or attend an interview with people who are unknown to you, you will have a referral that will make the process easier.
6. Openings are created for you to be opportunistic and flexible. You must actively listen to the communication that is going on around you.
7. Networking is a two way process that can enable you to help others.
8. Networking is a proactive job search method.
9. Networking puts you in control, setting your own pace and course. It is less stressful than sifting through tons of advertisements and is far more productive over time.
Unfortunately as in all aspects of life, networking has its disadvantages too.
